Did you know that the quaint little rose garden that stands on Hunter Street adjacent to Civic Train Station is planted with the official City of Newcastle
Rose that was developed in 1997 for Newcastle's Bi-Centenary celebrations? This beautiful raspberry scented rose has evolved into one of the best roses
to grow on the east coast with glorious cherry red flowers, classic shape and frequent flowering.
The Civic Road Reserve was once overgrown and untidy with no one taking responsibility for its upkeep. Enter the Civic Advisory Group, ready to respond
to requests for its beautification. With assistance from Newcastle Now, the group developed a successful plan to clean up this space and build
a garden planted with 20 City of Newcastle roses interspaced by lavender.
The labour force for this job was arranged through Jobfind’s work for the dole program and its ongoing maintenance is carried out by a Newcastle Now
volunteer who owned and operated a nursery during his working life.
