Changing face of civic site

Plans to revitalise almost an entire city block are progressing in the CBD with a development application being lodged for the demolition of a number of buildings in the civic precinct.

Lord Mayor JEFF McCLOY says although redevelopment plans have not been finalised for the corner site, bounded by Hunter Street west of the Playhouse Theatre and Auckland Street, a clear and level site is much more attractive to potential investors and developers.

“This is a key site in the city centre and progress here is welcome. The University has shown a lot of interest in the site and with the new law courts underway in the same block this could be a significant catalyst of CBD regeneration.

“The lodgement of the development application is the next step in the process and the proposal is now on public exhibition.”

“Council has been working with building tenants for a substantial amount of time now to investigate relocation opportunities.”

The development application for the demolition covers 403, 409, 417, 419 Hunter Street and 5 Auckland Street, Newcastle and is on public exhibition until 9 October 2012.
