Professional Services encouraged to think laterally about Supercars Friday

Newcastle Now is encouraging businesses in the professional services sector to consider flexible working arrangements on Supercars Friday and over the biggest event weekend in the city's history.

With the event just ten days away we are appealing to businesses to allow employees to work from home on the Friday, utilise flexi leave or even squeeze five days into four ahead of the race to help minimise congestion.

The first official day of the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 Event is expected to attract a crowd of 50,000 visitors to the city and this will put pressure on Newcastle’s transport system and fill the streets with foot traffic that will no doubt benefit retail and hospitality trade throughout the three-day event.

“As this is the first year the Supercars event is on in Newcastle, we want to encourage those business services that will not directly benefit to alleviate traffic coming into the city by offering their staff options,” says Edward Duc, Executive Chairperson, Newcastle Now.

"That Friday is just not the time to be driving into the city if you don’t need to and the professional services sector can assist by providing options for staff.

“Of course this may not be possible for all businesses and we understand that, but for those who can reasonably offer an alternative, then they should show their support for the event's first year and help make our city’s visitor experience an attractive one so that first time visitors want to plan their return.”

All workers traveling into the city during the event are strongly encouraged to factor in plenty of additional travel time and leave early. Parking is limited with extensive clearways and closures in place, drivers will not be able to park within walking distance of the site and we recommend making use of the Park & Ride services from Stockton and Broadmeadow instead (remember to pre-book a space).

All Newcastle Now members and city centre workers are encouarged to check the following websites for event information and road closures:

The Live Traffic NSW website and app is one of the best ways to receive live updates, traveler information and personalised alerts for all road closures.
