Located in one of Newcastle’s most significant heritage buildings,
The Lock-Up is a multidisciplinary contemporary arts space and
inner city hub for creative thinking and doing
In September 2014 The Lock-Up relaunched as a dedicated multi-disciplinary contemporary arts
space and an inner city hub for creative thinking and doing. Through curated artistic and public
programming, The Lock-Up aims to stimulate and challenge audiences and to promote current, cross
platform, experimental and diverse practice from local, national and international artists.
The program includes contemporary art exhibitions, events, site-specific installation and
performances, residencies, creative talks, workshops and a variety of activities designed to engage
the arts community and the public and to encourage the sharing of ideas and creative vision.
The Lock-Up’s nationally renowned Artist in Residence (AIR) Program provides onsite
accommodation, a work environment and community engagement opportunities for contemporary
artists working across a broad range of disciplines. The program enables creative professionals to
research and develop ideas for new work, explore new forms of expression, facilitates access to
community and cultural networks and feeds directly into The Lock-Up’s public and artistic programs.
Programming partnerships with organisations such as Octapod through This Is Not Art Festival,
Hunter Writers Centre, Newcastle Writers Festival and Renew Newcastle enables the ongoing
success and sustainability of aligned cultural organisations, builds cross organisation audiences and
develops the vision of The Lock-Up as a creative hub.
The Lock-Up’s program is possible through Newcastle Historic Reserve providing infrastructure and
base line funding, Arts NSW Program Funding, cash and in-kind partnerships with the School of
Creative Arts, University of Newcastle and Hunter TAFE’s Newcastle Art School and a significant
in-kind sponsorship by Headjam design agency.
Additional funding is sought annually and on a projects basis through grants, corporate
sponsorships, fundraising and income generation activities such as commercial venue hire of
The Yard event space.
