The Civic Theatre is one of Australia's great historic theatres. It hosts a wide range of concerts, musicals, plays, dance concerts and other events. Designed
by famed 1920s theatre architect Henry Eli White in “Spanish Baroque” style, the 1,520-seat theatre has held a dear place in the hearts of all Novocastrians
for more than 80 years. With its grand marble foyer, terrazzo balcony and historic main auditorium chandelier, a visit to this wonderful theatre will
make for an unforgettable experience.
Every year, the Civic Theatre hosts a range of events and productions. To ensure you don’t miss out on the diverse and entertaining program of ballet, theatre, comedy, cabaret and children’s shows, held in the Civic and the Playhouse, the theatre sells Civic Theatre Season Subscriptions, which ensure you get great seats and save up to 20% off normal ticket prices.
A tour of a theatre such as the Civic is a wonderful way to experience the magic and learn the history of the construction, uses, and acts and artists who have graced the stage. There are several flights of stairs, which can make the tours strenuous for some people; however the tours provide access to backstage areas, usually only seen by Theatre Technicians and staff, which mean you can learn how the theatre works ‘behind the scenes’. Due to accessibility to the stalls on the ground floor only, the theatre is unable to accommodate patrons in wheelchairs on these tours. The tours take anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the numbers in the group. The minimum group size is 10. Bookings are essential for tours, as the facilities are used frequently for events and functions. For bookings, please call 02 4929 1977
